In an era defined by the unprecedented challenges brought forth by the COVID-19 pandemic, museums have emerged as beacons of resilience, adaptation, and community engagement. A new report published today from Queen Mary University of London from the AHRC Stay Home Stories research project, based at the Centre for Studies of Home, delves into the experiences and insights of museum professionals from England, Wales, and Scotland.

The report, ‘Museums and COVID-19: Approaches to pandemic-related collecting, displays and public engagement’ delves into the remarkable journey of museum professionals as they responded to the COVID-19 crisis, a journey that involved rapid response initiatives, participatory collecting strategies to gather COVID-related material, digital engagement, and partnerships that transcended boundaries.

Update on the Robert Geffrye Statue

There is a statue of Robert Geffrye on the Museum of the Home's buildings to acknowledge his donation to build the almshouses. Geffrye is not connected to the founding of the Museum or its collections.

The Museum has been listening to many views and considering all options concerning the display of the Geffrye statue. The Museum believes there is potential to retain the statue on site but in an alternative and less prominent space, where they can better tell the full story of the history of the buildings and Robert Geffrye's life, including his involvement in transatlantic slavery.

The Museum has been working in partnership with Voyage Youth, to appoint a designer to develop ideas of what a new display might look like. The resulting designs will be made public before any decision is made to submit a planning application.

The latest updates as the project evolves are available on Museum of the Home's website.
